Your Website Traffic Is Falling and Your Rankings Are Not. Here Is What Changed

Impressions are up, clicks are down, and your position has not moved. That pattern has a specific cause, and it does not hit every page equally.

Search Console traffic analysis after AI Overviews

The pattern, and what causes it

A business owner opens Search Console and sees something that does not add up. Impressions are flat or rising. Average position has not moved. Clicks are down, sometimes by a third or more.

That combination almost always means the searcher got what they needed without clicking. Google now answers a large share of informational queries on the results page itself through AI Overviews and AI Mode. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini answer the same questions directly. Your page may still rank and may even be the source of the answer. The visitor simply never arrives.

This is structural. It is not a penalty, and no technical fix brings those clicks back in full.

Which pages lose, and which do not

The damage is uneven, and understanding that is what stops panic.

Losing the most: definitions, how-to guides, "what is" explainers, comparisons with a simple answer, and statistics pages. These are exactly the pages many businesses built for SEO over the last decade, and exactly the queries AI answers handle well.

Losing much less: service pages, pricing pages, local pages, product pages and anything where the searcher needs to act. Someone looking for a dentist near them, a quote for a kitchen renovation or a supplier for a specific component still clicks, because the answer is a business and not a paragraph.

The practical consequence: if most of your lost traffic came from blog posts that never produced enquiries, your business may have lost very little. If your lost traffic came from service and location pages, something else is going on and it deserves a proper audit.

How to confirm it in twenty minutes

1. In Search Console, compare the last three months with the same period a year ago. Filter by page. Split pages into two groups: informational (blog, guides) and commercial (services, locations, products, pricing).

2. For each group, compare clicks, impressions and position. If informational clicks fell while positions held, that is the AI answer effect. If commercial clicks fell with positions, you have a ranking problem.

3. Check organic leads or organic revenue in GA4 or your CRM for the same periods. This is the number that matters. Many businesses find sessions down sharply and organic enquiries roughly flat.

4. Search your top five commercial questions in Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity. Note whether you are named, cited or absent, and who appears instead. That is your baseline for the next section.

What to change

Be the source the answer quotes. AI answers pull from pages that state a clear answer early, use headings that match real questions, include specific facts and carry structured data. Rewriting your strongest guides so the answer is in the first two sentences, followed by the detail, improves your chance of being cited. A citation with your brand name has value even without a click.

Strengthen the pages where buyers still click. Service pages, pricing, location pages and case studies deserve more investment now, not less. Most businesses have thin service pages and long blog posts. That balance should flip.

Build the entity around your brand. AI systems describe businesses using what they find across the web: your site, your Google Business Profile, directories, reviews, articles that mention you. Consistent facts in all of those places make it more likely that you are named and described correctly.

Measure differently. Track branded search volume, citation presence for your priority questions, and organic leads. Sessions alone now understate what search is doing for you.

We cover the method in more detail in our guide to GEO, AEO and AIO and on the Search Everywhere Optimisation page.

Market differences worth knowing

AI answers appear more often in some markets and languages than others, and rollout has not been uniform. English-language queries in the USA, the UK and Canada tend to see them first and most often. India now sees them widely in English, with Hindi and regional language coverage growing.

In the UAE, where searches split between English and Arabic, the Arabic results page often looks different from the English one for the same intent. A business that only publishes in English may be cited in one and absent from the other.

Local intent is the most protected everywhere. Map results and Google Business Profiles still carry a large share of clicks for "near me" and city-level searches, which is why local search work often holds up better than content marketing in this period.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my website traffic dropping when my rankings have not changed?

Most often because the searcher is getting the answer on the results page through AI Overviews, AI Mode or a featured snippet, or from an AI assistant, and not clicking through. You can confirm it in Search Console: impressions steady or rising, position stable, clicks falling, mostly on informational pages.

Are AI Overviews reducing clicks to websites?

For informational queries, yes, noticeably. For commercial, local and transactional searches the effect is much smaller, because the searcher needs a business rather than a paragraph. That is why the drop in enquiries is usually smaller than the drop in sessions.

How do I know if AI Overviews are affecting my site?

Split your pages into informational and commercial groups in Search Console and compare year on year. If informational clicks fell while positions held, and commercial pages are stable, AI answers are the likely cause. Then search your key questions yourself and see what appears above the results.

Can I get my traffic back?

Not all of it, and anyone promising that is guessing. What you can do is become the cited source in AI answers, strengthen the commercial pages where buyers still click, and build branded demand so people search for you by name.

Should I stop writing blog content?

Not entirely, but change what you write. Generic definitions and how-to posts are the content AI answers replace. Content built on your own data, client experience, pricing detail and specific opinions is harder to replace and more likely to be cited.

Does being cited in an AI Overview help my business?

It helps with recognition and trust even without a click, and people who do click through from a citation tend to be further along in their decision. Branded search often rises when a business is cited consistently for its category questions.

What is zero-click search?

A search where the person gets what they need from the results page and does not visit any website. Weather, definitions, quick facts and now many how-to questions are largely zero-click. Local and commercial searches are much less so.

Is this a Google penalty?

No. A penalty shows as a drop in position, and usually a manual action message in Search Console. Falling clicks with stable positions is a change in how results are displayed, not a judgement against your site.

What should I measure instead of traffic?

Organic leads or revenue, branded search volume, citation presence for your priority questions across Google and the major AI assistants, and click-through on commercial pages. Sessions still matter, but they no longer tell the full story.
