GEO, AEO and AIO: How to Get Your Business Cited in AI Answers

A growing share of buyers now get an answer instead of ten blue links. Being the source that answer is built from is a different job from ranking first.

Performance Marketing Strategies

Three acronyms, one behaviour change

The terms are newer than the practice. AEO, answer engine optimisation, is about being the source that answers a specific question directly. GEO, generative engine optimisation, is about being retrieved and cited when a generative system composes an answer. AIO is the umbrella people use for visibility across AI-driven surfaces, including AI Overviews inside Google itself.

What sits behind all three is one shift in behaviour: a large and growing share of buyers now ask a question and receive an answer, rather than a list of pages to evaluate. If your business is not in the material that answer was assembled from, you were never in the consideration set. There is no page two to be found on.

The encouraging part is that this is not a separate discipline bolted onto SEO. It is the same discipline held to a higher standard of clarity, structure and evidence.

What actually gets a source cited

From auditing which pages get pulled into AI answers and which do not, five properties recur.

The answer comes first. Pages that state the answer in the first two sentences under a question-shaped heading get quoted. Pages that spend four paragraphs setting the scene get skipped. Write the conclusion, then the reasoning.

Specifics, not adjectives. Numbers, ranges, named steps, conditions and trade-offs are quotable. "Industry-leading solutions" is not. This is why thin, superlative-heavy service pages are invisible in AI answers no matter how well they are optimised for keywords.

Structure a machine can parse. Clean heading hierarchy, short paragraphs, real lists, tables for comparisons, and a genuine FAQ section where each question is one a human would type.

Corroboration off your own site. Retrieval systems prefer claims they can verify. Consistent business details across directories, reviews, credible mentions and profiles all raise the confidence that you are a real entity worth citing.

Evidence of experience. Named authors with real credentials, dates on content, methodology described rather than implied, and specifics that only a practitioner would know. This is what Google's own guidance has always called experience and expertise, and generative systems reward it for the same reason.

What makes a page citable by an AI answer
1Answer firstThe conclusion appears in the first two sentences under a question-shaped heading
2Specifics, not adjectivesNumbers, ranges, named steps and conditions — quotable material
3Parsable structureClean headings, short paragraphs, real lists, genuine FAQs
4Corroboration off-siteConsistent details, reviews and mentions the system can verify
5Evidence of experienceNamed authors, dates, described method, practitioner detail
Retrieval systems quote sources that are unambiguous, specific and corroborated. Each property below is something you can act on this month.

Structured data: the part most businesses skip

Schema markup does not make you rank by itself. What it does is remove ambiguity about what you are, and ambiguity is what stops a machine citing you.

The set we implement for a service business: Organization or LocalBusiness with address, contact details, service area and social profiles; a Service entry per offering, linked back to the organisation; FAQPage on pages with genuine question-and-answer content; Article or BlogPosting with author, publish and modified dates; BreadcrumbList for hierarchy; and Review or AggregateRating only where the underlying reviews genuinely exist.

Two rules. Every schema claim must match visible page content, or you are inviting a manual action. And use stable identifiers so your organisation, services and articles link into one graph rather than sitting as disconnected fragments — an entity a system can resolve is far more likely to be named than a set of unrelated pages.

Local AI answers, city by city

Ask an assistant for a service provider "near me" or in a named city and the answer is assembled largely from local signals: your Google Business Profile, category and service list, review volume and recency, consistency of name, address and phone across the web, and any genuinely local page content on your site.

For a business selling across Indian metros, that means a real page per market you actually serve — with local proof, local enquiries, local pricing context where relevant — and not fifteen templated pages with the city name swapped. Templated location pages were already weak for SEO. For AI answers they are worse than nothing, because thin duplicated content lowers confidence in the whole domain.

The practical order we work in: fix the profile and category set, get review velocity moving with named service mentions, clean up citations and listings, then build a small number of substantial city pages for the markets that matter most — Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad first, then Gurugram, Noida, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Nagpur and Ranchi as demand justifies.

How to measure it without fooling yourself

Sessions alone will mislead you here. Answer engines satisfy many queries without a click, so a page can be more influential and less visited in the same quarter.

Track four things instead. First, citation presence: for your priority questions, ask the major assistants and record whether you are named and how you are described. Second, branded search volume, because AI-assisted discovery shows up later as people searching your name. Third, assisted conversions from organic and direct, which is where uncredited AI referrals often land. Fourth, the quality of enquiries — buyers arriving from a well-composed AI answer tend to be better informed and closer to a decision.

Set a baseline before the work starts. Without one, three months of progress is indistinguishable from three months of noise.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SEO, GEO, AEO and AIO?

SEO aims at ranking pages in a results list. AEO aims at being the direct answer to a specific question. GEO aims at being retrieved and cited when a generative system writes an answer. AIO is the umbrella term for visibility across AI-driven surfaces. In practice they share most of the same work — clear answers, credible evidence, clean structure — held to a higher standard.

Can you guarantee my business will appear in AI answers?

No, and nobody honestly can. AI systems change retrieval behaviour frequently and give no ranking dashboard. What can be done is make your business the most citable source available on your topics: plain answers, real specifics, correct structured data, a consistent entity footprint and third-party corroboration. That is what moves the odds.

Is schema markup necessary for AI search visibility?

It is not a magic switch, but it removes ambiguity about who you are, what you sell and where you operate, and that materially improves the chance of being understood and cited. Organization or LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, Article and BreadcrumbList are the practical minimum for a service business.

My organic traffic is falling but rankings are stable. What is happening?

Most likely AI Overviews and assistant answers are satisfying queries without a click, particularly informational ones. Check whether the decline is concentrated in question-shaped queries while branded search and conversion rate hold steady. The response is to move up the funnel: own the questions that lead to purchase, and make sure being cited in an answer still routes the buyer to you.

How long does GEO and AEO work take to show results?

Structural and schema fixes can be reflected within weeks. Becoming a routinely cited source on competitive topics takes three to six months, because it depends on content depth and on off-site corroboration accumulating. It is compounding work, not a campaign.

Do I need a separate page for every city I serve?

Only for markets where you genuinely serve customers and can say something specific — local proof, local demand patterns, local delivery or service conditions. A small number of substantial city pages outperforms fifteen templated ones, and thin duplicated location pages actively harm confidence in your whole domain.

How important is my Google Business Profile for AI answers?

For anything local, very. Profile completeness, correct primary and secondary categories, an accurate service list, review volume and recency, and consistent name, address and phone across the web are among the strongest inputs to local answers in both traditional search and AI assistants.

Does AI-generated content help or hurt AI search visibility?

Undifferentiated AI-written content hurts, because it repeats what is already indexed and adds no new information worth citing. What earns citations is material a machine could not have produced on its own: your data, your process, your specific numbers, your named practitioners. Use tools for drafting if you like, but the substance has to come from real work.

How do I know whether AI assistants are citing my business?

Test it deliberately. Build a list of the 20 to 30 questions your buyers ask, put them to the major assistants on a fixed schedule, and record whether you are named, how you are described and which competitors appear instead. Pair that with branded search volume and assisted conversions. It is manual, and it is the only reliable read available today.
