Schema Markup for AI Answers: What to Add, What to Skip
Structured data does not make a page rank on its own. It makes it far easier for machines to know what your business is, what it offers and what it costs, which is what an assistant needs before recommending you.

What structured data does, and does not do
Structured data is code, usually JSON-LD, that describes the facts on a page in a format machines read reliably: this is a business, here is its name, address and phone, these are its services and prices, these are questions and answers.
It does not make a weak page rank. It removes ambiguity. Search engines and AI assistants still judge the page on its content and reputation, but they understand it faster and more accurately. For businesses competing to be named in AI answers, that clarity matters.
Google has also reduced which rich results it shows. FAQ rich results, for example, now appear only for a limited set of authoritative sites. The markup is still read and still useful for understanding, even where no visible rich result appears.
The types worth adding
Organization on the home page: name, logo, URL, contact details and sameAs links to your official profiles on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and relevant directories. This connects your entity across the web.
WebSite with your site name, so search engines show the right name in results.
LocalBusiness or ProfessionalService for businesses with a location or service area: address, geo coordinates, opening hours, area served, price range.
Service on each service page: name, description, provider, area served, and an Offer with price where you publish one.
FAQPage on pages with genuine question-and-answer sections visible to visitors.
BreadcrumbList on every page below the home page.
Article or BlogPosting on articles, with author, publisher, dates and images.
Product and Review for e-commerce, with price, availability and genuine review data.
Every page on this site carries the relevant set, generated from the same data that renders the page, so markup and content never drift apart.
What to skip or avoid
Markup that does not match the page. FAQ markup for questions not visible on the page, or reviews that are not shown, breaks Google's guidelines and can lead to manual actions.
Self-serving review markup on your own business. Google does not show star ratings for reviews a business publishes about itself on its own site.
Dozens of rarely used types. Adding every possible schema type adds maintenance without benefit. Focus on the types that describe your business and pages accurately.
Plugin defaults you have not checked. Many SEO plugins output markup with wrong business types, missing fields or duplicate organisations. Check what is actually on the page.
How to implement and test
Generate structured data from the same source as the page content wherever possible, in templates rather than by hand, so updates to prices, services or FAQs update both.
Test each page template with Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator. Check Search Console's enhancement reports for errors after deployment.
Keep facts consistent: the business name, address, phone and description in your markup should match your Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. Consistency across sources is what AI systems use to trust a fact.

Market-specific details
Use areaServed accurately for each market you serve, and the right currency in Offer: INR in India, USD in the USA, GBP in the UK, AED in the UAE and CAD in Canada.
For bilingual sites in the UAE and Canada, each language version should carry its own markup with inLanguage set, and the business name and address should be consistent across both.
Frequently asked questions
Does schema markup help with AI search?
It helps search engines and AI assistants understand the facts about your business and pages more reliably. It does not guarantee citation or ranking, but clear structured data combined with clear content and consistent third-party information improves your chances.
What schema should a small business use?
Organization, WebSite, LocalBusiness or ProfessionalService, Service on service pages, FAQPage where genuine FAQs are visible, BreadcrumbList, and Article on blog posts. E-commerce businesses add Product and Offer.
Is FAQ schema still worth adding?
Google now shows FAQ rich results only for a limited set of sites, but the markup is still read and helps machines understand question-and-answer content. Add it where the FAQs are genuinely visible on the page.
What is JSON-LD?
A format for structured data that sits in a script tag in the page, separate from the visible HTML. Google recommends it because it is easy to generate and maintain.
Can schema markup hurt my site?
Markup that misrepresents the page, such as hidden FAQs or fake reviews, can lead to manual actions and loss of rich results. Accurate markup that matches visible content does not hurt.
How do I test my schema markup?
Use the Google Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator for individual pages, and the enhancement reports in Search Console for site-wide issues.
What is sameAs in Organization schema?
A list of URLs for your official profiles elsewhere, such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. It helps search engines and AI systems connect your website with the same business across the web.
Should I use a plugin for schema?
Plugins can work, but check their output. Many use the wrong business type, leave out key fields or create duplicate entities. Template-generated markup from your own content is usually more accurate.
Does schema help local SEO?
LocalBusiness markup with accurate name, address, phone, opening hours and area served supports local understanding, especially when consistent with your Google Business Profile. The profile itself matters more for map rankings.
