Google Shopping Feed Optimisation: The Fastest Way to Lift E-commerce ROAS

Shopping ads have no keywords. Google matches searches to your products using the feed. Better feed data often lifts ROAS more than any bid change.

Why the feed matters so much

Search campaigns use keywords. Shopping and Performance Max use your product feed: titles, descriptions, categories, attributes and images. Google reads the feed to decide which searches each product appears for and how relevant it is.

A product titled "Classic Model 2" will rarely appear for "brass diya set of 4 for diwali". A product titled with what buyers search for will. That is the whole game.

The changes that move results

Titles: brand, product type, key attributes such as material, size, colour, quantity and use, in the order buyers search. Front-load the most important words.

Product category and type: the most specific Google category, plus your own product type hierarchy.

Attributes: colour, size, material, gender, age group and pattern filled completely where relevant.

GTINs and brand: correct identifiers where they exist, which improve matching and eligibility.

Images: clean main images on plain backgrounds, plus lifestyle images as additional images.

Custom labels: margin band, price band, best seller, seasonal and new arrival, so campaigns can bid more on profitable products.

Structure campaigns around margin

Once custom labels exist, split Performance Max or Shopping campaigns by margin band or product group, with ROAS targets set from break-even for each. High-margin products can run at a lower ROAS target and win more traffic; thin-margin products need a higher one.

Exclude products that cannot be advertised profitably, and products frequently out of stock. Review the search terms and product performance reports weekly.

For Ethnic Handikrafts, a large multi-category handicrafts catalogue, feed optimisation for Google Shopping and Meta catalogue was a core part of reaching 12 lakh rupees in monthly sales from month two. Details are on our case studies page.

Shopify, marketplaces and markets

Shopify's Google and YouTube app creates a basic feed. It rarely includes optimised titles or custom labels, so most stores need a feed management layer or supplemental feeds. We set this up as part of E-commerce and Marketplace Growth.

Shopping competition is highest in the USA and UK, where feed quality separates profitable stores from the rest. In India, Shopping ads compete with marketplace listings in the same results, so price and delivery speed matter. Selling into the UAE or Canada needs separate feeds with local currency, shipping and language where relevant.

Frequently asked questions

What is Google Shopping feed optimisation?

Improving the product data Google uses for Shopping and Performance Max, including titles, categories, attributes, identifiers, images and custom labels, so products match more relevant searches.

How do I write good product titles for Google Shopping?

Include brand, product type and key attributes such as material, size, colour and quantity, with the words buyers search for at the start.

What are custom labels in Google Merchant Center?

Fields you define, such as margin band or best seller, used to group products in campaigns and set different targets.

Does feed optimisation improve ROAS?

Often significantly, because products match more relevant searches and campaigns can bid by margin.

Is the Shopify Google feed enough?

It works as a base, but usually lacks optimised titles and custom labels. Most stores benefit from supplemental feeds or a feed tool.

Do GTINs matter?

Yes. Correct GTINs improve matching and eligibility where products have them.

Does the same feed work for Meta ads?

Yes. A clean catalogue improves Meta Advantage+ catalogue campaigns too.

How often should I update my product feed?

Prices and stock should sync daily or more often. Titles and labels should be reviewed monthly and when products change.

Can I advertise internationally with one feed?

Usually you need separate feeds or feed rules per country for currency, shipping and language.
