Amazon Ads That Make Money: ACoS, TACoS and Break-Even, Explained Simply

A low ACoS can mean you are under-investing. A high one can be fine if organic sales are rising. The number that tells you whether Amazon advertising works is TACoS.

The three Amazon ad types

Sponsored Products promote individual listings in search results and on product pages. They carry most of the spend for most sellers.

Sponsored Brands show your logo, headline and several products or a video at the top of results. They need Brand Registry and help with brand recall.

Sponsored Display retargets shoppers who viewed products and targets placements on related product pages.

Flipkart Ads work on similar principles with product listing ads, brand ads and display, and the same economics apply.

Break-even ACoS, worked out

ACoS is ad spend divided by ad-attributed sales. Your break-even ACoS is your profit margin before advertising: selling price minus product cost, Amazon fees, shipping and expected returns, divided by selling price.

Example: a product sells for 1,000 rupees. Product cost is 350, fees and shipping 250, and expected returns cost 50. Profit before ads is 350, so break-even ACoS is 35 per cent. Below 35 per cent, ad sales are profitable; above it, they lose money.

Targets can sit above break-even for a launch, deliberately, to build rank. They should sit below break-even for mature products.

Why TACoS matters more

TACoS is ad spend divided by total sales, including organic. Amazon ranks products partly on sales velocity, so ad sales help organic rank. If TACoS falls while total sales rise, advertising is building organic demand, which is the goal.

If TACoS rises while organic sales stay flat, you are buying sales rather than building rank. That is usually a listing, review or price problem, not a bidding problem.

A campaign structure that works

Research campaigns: automatic and broad match at modest bids, to find search terms that convert.

Performance campaigns: exact match on proven terms, with bids set from target ACoS.

Brand defence: your brand terms and your own product pages, so competitors do not take your shoppers.

Competitor and category targeting: product targeting on competitor listings where your product compares well.

Move winning search terms from research to performance weekly, and add negatives. Keep stock healthy, because out-of-stock listings lose rank and ads stop. Listing quality, A+ content and reviews raise conversion rate, which lowers ACoS at the same bids. We run this inside our E-commerce and Marketplace Growth programme.

Amazon by market

Amazon.in competes with Flipkart and Meesho, and COD returns affect break-even more than elsewhere. Amazon.com in the USA has the highest click costs and the most mature competition. Amazon.co.uk in the UK and Amazon.ca in Canada are smaller and often less contested. Amazon.ae in the UAE competes with Noon, with Arabic search terms worth covering in Dubai and Sharjah.

Indian sellers can reach several of these through Amazon Global Selling, covered in our guide to selling abroad.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good ACoS on Amazon?

One below your break-even ACoS, which equals your profit margin before advertising. A 35 per cent margin product is profitable below 35 per cent ACoS. Launch products may run higher deliberately.

What is the difference between ACoS and TACoS?

ACoS is ad spend divided by ad sales. TACoS is ad spend divided by total sales including organic. TACoS shows whether advertising is building organic rank.

How do I lower my Amazon ACoS?

Improve listing conversion with better images, A+ content and reviews, move proven terms to exact match, add negatives, and pause terms that spend without selling.

How much should I spend on Amazon ads?

Enough to give priority products steady visibility while staying within target ACoS. Many sellers set budgets as a share of target sales by product.

Are Sponsored Brands worth it?

For brands with Brand Registry and several related products, usually yes, for visibility and brand defence.

Do Amazon ads help organic ranking?

Yes, indirectly. Ad sales count toward sales velocity, which influences organic rank. That is why TACoS matters.

Do Flipkart ads work the same way?

Broadly yes, with product listing ads, brand ads and display. Calculate break-even the same way, using Flipkart fees.

Should I advertise when stock is low?

Usually reduce spend. Running out of stock loses rank and wastes the ad investment that built it.

Do you manage Amazon ads outside India?

Yes, on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.ae and Amazon.ca, alongside Shopify and other marketplaces.
