Shopify vs WooCommerce in 2027: Which Platform Should Your Online Store Use?
Both platforms can run a successful store. The right choice depends on how much you want to manage yourself, where you sell, and how your catalogue and integrations work.

The short answer
For most brands selling physical products that want to focus on products, marketing and customers rather than servers, Shopify is the safer choice: hosting, security, checkout and updates are handled, and the app ecosystem covers most needs. WooCommerce makes sense when you already run a content-heavy WordPress site, need deep customisation Shopify does not allow, want full ownership of the hosting and code, or have unusual business rules. We build on both and recommend per business.
Cost
Shopify charges a monthly plan plus apps, and transaction fees unless you use Shopify Payments where available. WooCommerce is free software, but you pay for hosting, premium plugins, security and more developer time for updates and fixes. Over a few years the totals are often closer than people expect; compare full cost including maintenance, not just the subscription. See our hosting guide for WooCommerce hosting considerations.
Payments in India and the USA
In the USA, UK and Canada, Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay give a fast checkout. In India, both platforms support Razorpay, UPI and other local gateways; check current gateway support and fees for your plan. WooCommerce gives more freedom to use any gateway, at the cost of more setup and testing.
Speed and SEO
Both can be fast and rank well. Shopify's hosting and CDN are consistent, but heavy themes and too many apps slow stores down. WooCommerce speed depends on hosting quality, caching and plugin discipline. Both support clean URLs, structured data and editable titles; WooCommerce offers more control over URL structure, Shopify enforces some fixed paths. Content-heavy stores often find WordPress more flexible for blogs and guides. See our e-commerce SEO guide.
Marketplaces and integrations
Shopify has mature integrations with Google Merchant Center, Meta catalogues, Amazon, Walmart and many Indian marketplaces through apps. WooCommerce has plugins for the same, with more variation in quality. If you sell heavily across channels, inventory sync matters more than the storefront; plan it from the start. Our inventory integration guide covers this.
Maintenance and risk
Shopify handles core security and updates. WooCommerce requires you or your developer to update WordPress, plugins and themes, monitor security and manage backups. That is not hard with a good host and developer, but it is real ongoing work, and neglected WooCommerce stores are a common target for attacks.
Our recommendation by store type
New D2C brand launching quickly: Shopify. Existing WordPress publisher adding a shop: WooCommerce. Large catalogue with complex B2B pricing: depends on requirements; sometimes a custom build. Brands selling on Amazon, Flipkart and their own store: usually Shopify for its integrations. For Miayaa Lifestyle we chose Shopify with custom apps and marketplace integrations, and it sold 10+ orders a day from week one.
Questions to ask your developer
Which platform do you recommend for my catalogue, markets and integrations, and why? What will the total yearly cost be? Who handles updates and security? Can I move platforms later if needed? A developer who only builds on one platform will usually recommend it; ask why it fits your case specifically.
Migration if you are switching
Moving an existing store between platforms is common and manageable with care: export and map products, variants and images; migrate customers and order history where possible; recreate collections and filters; set up 301 redirects from every old URL to its new equivalent so rankings carry over; reconnect payments, shipping, tracking and feeds; and test checkout thoroughly before switching DNS. Plan the switch for a quieter sales period and monitor Search Console for errors in the weeks after.

Next step
If you are comparing providers for choosing and building an online store, the quickest way to see whether we are a fit is a discovery call. It is paid, $9 in the USA, UK, UAE and Canada or INR 499 in India, and lasts 45 to 60 minutes with a senior consultant, not a salesperson. Bring your product range, where you sell and what you need the store to do. We will recommend a platform and show you the build plan.
Our services start at $500 per month in the USA, UK, UAE and Canada and INR 35,000 per month in India. You own every account, page and piece of data, and we report on leads and sales, not vanity numbers. We will tell you plainly if your constraint is the offer, the price or the sales process rather than marketing.
Apply for a discovery call through the short form on this page, or message us on WhatsApp.
