The Shopify Store That Converts: What Actually Moves the Number
Doubling conversion rate has the same effect on revenue as doubling ad spend, and costs a fraction. Most brands still choose the ad spend.

Start with the arithmetic
Take your current traffic, conversion rate and average order value. Now model two changes: a 30 per cent increase in ad spend, and a change in conversion rate from 1.2 per cent to 1.6 per cent. The second is usually the bigger revenue number, and unlike the first it does not raise your acquisition cost — it lowers it on every rupee you were already spending.
That is the whole argument for conversion work. It is also why we build landing and product pages as part of media engagements rather than treating them as somebody else's project. The most common reason brands skip it is that page work has no dashboard shouting for attention, while Ads Manager does.
Speed, honestly measured
Measure on a mid-range Android phone on a mobile connection, not on your office wi-fi and a MacBook. That is what your customer has.
What we find slowing Indian Shopify stores, in rough order of damage: oversized hero images uploaded straight from a shoot; six or more apps injecting scripts on every page, several of which are no longer used; review and chat widgets loading before content; sliders and animation libraries on the home page; and theme code that has been edited by four agencies with nothing removed.
Practical order of work: audit and delete unused apps, compress and correctly size images, defer non-essential scripts, remove the carousel, and move tracking to a server-side setup so the browser carries fewer third-party tags. Speed work is unglamorous and it is often the single largest conversion gain available.
The product page is the sales page
Most Indian D2C traffic from Meta lands directly on a product page, decides in seconds, and never sees your home page. Treat that page as the whole shop.
What has to be answerable without hunting: what this is and who it is for, what it costs including delivery, when it will arrive at my pincode, what happens if I do not like it, why I should believe you, and what other people who bought it said. If a visitor has to scroll three times or open another tab to answer any of those, you are paying for the click twice.
Specifics that reliably matter in India: a pincode-level delivery estimate, a plainly worded returns window, GST-inclusive pricing with no surprise at checkout, real photographs of the product in use rather than only studio shots, and reviews with names and dates. Trust badges do less than a single credible review paragraph.
COD, RTO and the margin nobody models
Cash on delivery raises conversion rate and quietly eats margin through return-to-origin. Both facts are true at once, so the answer is management rather than an on-off switch.
What works: a small prepaid incentive framed as a discount rather than a COD penalty; address and phone confirmation on WhatsApp before dispatch; a partial COD advance for high-value orders; excluding pincodes and repeat-refusal customers with poor delivery history; and sending the delivered-order event back to your ad platforms so campaigns learn from orders that actually arrived rather than orders that were merely placed.
Model it before you change it. Know your RTO rate split by prepaid and COD, your reverse logistics cost, and what a percentage point of RTO is worth in rupees. That number decides how far it is worth going.
Checkout, then testing discipline
At checkout, every extra field costs orders. Ask for what is needed to ship and bill, offer the payment methods your market actually uses including UPI, show total cost early rather than revealing shipping at the last step, and make sure the mobile keyboard behaves for phone and pincode fields. Recover abandoned carts on WhatsApp as well as email — in India the message gets read.
On testing: run one change at a time, decide the metric before you start, and let the test collect enough orders to be meaningful — for most Indian D2C brands that means weeks, not days. Test the things that carry decisions: price presentation, offer structure, product page order, primary image, delivery messaging, review placement. Button colours are a distraction that produces confident conclusions from noise.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good conversion rate for a Shopify store in India?
It varies widely by category, price point and traffic source, so comparing yourself to a global benchmark is not useful. What is useful is your own trend and the gap between traffic sources: paid social traffic converts differently from branded search, and if the gap is very wide the problem is usually the landing page rather than the product.
Should we offer cash on delivery?
In most Indian consumer categories COD lifts conversion rate enough to be worth offering, provided you manage return-to-origin actively — prepaid incentives, address confirmation on WhatsApp, pincode-level exclusions and a partial advance on high-value orders. Model the margin impact first so the decision is arithmetic, not habit.
How much does site speed affect sales?
Meaningfully, and more in India than in markets with better average connectivity, because much of your traffic is on mid-range Android devices on mobile data. Test on that hardware rather than on your own laptop. In our experience app bloat and unoptimised images are the two biggest culprits, and both are fixable in days.
Do we need a custom theme or is a standard one fine?
A well-configured standard theme with clean code and few apps outperforms a heavily customised one that four agencies have edited. Custom work is worth it for a genuinely distinctive product experience or unusual merchandising logic, not for aesthetics alone.
How many Shopify apps is too many?
Every app that injects a script on every page is a cost. Audit what you have, remove anything not producing measurable value, and be sceptical of apps duplicating something the theme or your tracking already does. Stores we take over routinely have several paid apps nobody has opened in a year.
What is the fastest way to increase average order value?
Product bundles at a genuine saving, a free-shipping threshold set slightly above your current average order value, and a relevant post-purchase upsell. Discount stacking and sitewide coupons raise volume while shrinking margin, which usually leaves you working harder for the same profit.
Do we need server-side tracking on Shopify?
For any brand spending seriously on ads, yes. Native integrations leave gaps in server-side purchase events, discounted order values and checkout events, so reported ROAS understates reality and the algorithms optimise on partial data. It is a configuration and validation job rather than a rebuild.
How long should we run a conversion test?
Long enough to collect enough orders for the result to be distinguishable from noise — for most Indian D2C brands that is two to four weeks per test, not two days. Also avoid running tests across a major sale period, which distorts everything.
Do you build Shopify stores or only optimise them?
Both. We build stores focused on speed, product page structure, average order value and repeat purchase, and we take over existing stores where the fastest gains are usually app cleanup, image and speed work, product page restructuring and tracking.
Should we spend on ads or on the website first?
Fix measurement first, the page second, and scale spend third. Spending more on traffic that lands on a page converting below its potential means paying full price to learn a lesson you could have learned cheaply.
