A Marketing Strategy on One Page: What It Must Answer
Most marketing plans are long, generic and ignored. A useful one fits on a page and decides what you will not do as clearly as what you will.

Why one page
A forty-page marketing plan gets written once and never read again. A single page can sit next to the weekly numbers and be used to decide what to do next and what to decline.
The page has to answer eight questions. Each answer is a choice, and each choice rules things out. That is the point. A strategy that includes every channel and every audience is a list, not a strategy.
The eight questions
1. Who exactly is the customer? Not "businesses" or "homeowners". A specific description: size, location, situation, the problem that makes them look for you now.
2. What do they get, and why you? The offer in one sentence, and the reason to choose you over the alternatives, including doing nothing.
3. What does it cost, and what is a customer worth? Price, margin, and the acquisition cost you can afford. See our article on CAC and lifetime value.
4. Where do these customers look for solutions? Search, social, referrals, marketplaces, industry events, AI assistants. Be specific.
5. Which one or two channels will you commit to first? Based on question four and your budget. Everything else waits.
6. What happens after someone enquires? Response time, follow-up, sales process. Marketing that ends at the enquiry is half a strategy.
7. What will you measure weekly? The seven numbers from our owner dashboard article, with a target for each.
8. What will you not do this quarter? The channels, audiences and ideas you are deliberately declining. This protects focus.
A worked example
An interior design studio. Customer: homeowners who have just taken possession of a new apartment, budget above a set level, within a defined area of the city. Offer: turnkey interiors with 3D previews before work starts and a written warranty. Economics: average project value, margin and the maximum cost per qualified enquiry that works. Where they look: Google searches for interior designers in their area, Instagram for ideas, builder and society groups. Channels: Google Search and Meta, with a portfolio landing page. After enquiry: WhatsApp reply within minutes, site visit booked within 48 hours. Measure: qualified enquiries, site visits, signed projects. Not this quarter: YouTube, print, a second city.
That is close to the strategy we used with Red Poppy Interiors and Nexus Interior Studio, both on our case studies page.
Common mistakes
Starting with channels. "We need to be on LinkedIn" is a tactic in search of a reason. Start with the customer.
Too many audiences. A plan aimed at everyone persuades nobody. One primary customer per quarter is usually enough for a small business.
No economics. Without knowing what a customer is worth, you cannot judge any channel.
Ignoring the sales side. Good leads handled slowly produce poor results.
Never reviewing it. Review every quarter. Keep what the numbers support, and change what they do not.
Adapting it by market
The eight questions stay the same. The answers change. In India, WhatsApp is often the answer to question six, and vernacular content can change the answer to question four. In the UAE, language choice is part of question one. In Canada, Quebec needs its own French answers. In the USA and UK, higher acquisition costs make question three decisive.
If you want help writing it, our Growth Strategy Council and Category and Market Intelligence services are built for this stage.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write a marketing strategy for a small business?
Answer eight questions: who the customer is, what you offer and why you, the economics, where customers look, which one or two channels you will commit to, what happens after enquiry, what you will measure weekly, and what you will not do this quarter. Fit it on one page.
What is the difference between a marketing strategy and a marketing plan?
The strategy is the set of choices about customer, offer, channels and measurement. The plan is the schedule of actions that carries it out. A small business can combine both on one page with a short action list.
How many marketing channels should a small business use?
Start with one or two and do them properly. Spreading a small budget and limited time across many channels produces weak results everywhere and data too thin to learn from.
How often should I update my marketing strategy?
Review it every quarter against your weekly numbers. Change it when the evidence shows a channel, audience or offer is not working, not when a new trend appears.
Should a marketing strategy include sales?
Yes. What happens after someone enquires, response time, follow-up and sales process, often decides results more than the marketing itself.
What is a go-to-market strategy?
A strategy for launching a product or entering a market: the target customer, positioning, pricing, channels and sales approach. For a small business, the one-page strategy covers the same ground.
How do I choose my target customer?
Look at your best existing customers: who they are, why they chose you and what they bought. Find the common situation that made them look for a solution. That is usually your primary customer.
Do I need a marketing consultant to write a strategy?
Not necessarily. Many owners can write a good first version with these questions. An experienced adviser helps with the economics, channel choice and challenging assumptions.
What should I leave out of my marketing strategy?
Channels, audiences and ideas you cannot fund or execute well this quarter. Writing them down as deliberate exclusions protects focus when new ideas come up.
