Your Ads Are Fine. The Page Is Losing the Money.

Click price is set by an auction you share with competitors. Conversion rate is yours alone. Most accounts are trying to fix the first and ignoring the second.

Landing page conversion rate optimisation

The arithmetic nobody runs

Cost per customer is not a number the ad platform decides. It is the product of three things: what you pay for a click, how relevant that click was, and what share of those visitors take the action you wanted.

Almost all optimisation effort goes into the first two. Bids, keywords, match types, audiences, creative. Those matter, and they are also the two you have least control over, because click price is set by an auction shared with every competitor bidding on the same query.

The third is yours outright. Moving a page from two per cent to four per cent halves your cost per customer. No bid adjustment, keyword expansion or audience refinement available to you produces a shift of that size. And unlike a bid increase, which is a permanent cost, a page improvement is a fixed cost that keeps paying.

It also compounds sideways. A better page improves Google Ads, Meta, organic search and email at the same time. Campaign optimisation improves only the campaign it was applied to.

Six defects we find in almost every page

The home page is doing landing page work. A visitor who searched a specific commercial query arrives at general positioning, navigation to fourteen other places, and no answer to what they typed. This single decision destroys more paid media budget than any bidding error we see.

The page asks for more than sales needs. Every additional required field costs completions. If your sales team can qualify from name, phone and one context question, asking for company size, budget range and job title before you have earned the conversation is buying fewer enquiries at the same click price.

Objections go unanswered. There are usually five reasons someone will not act, and your sales team can list them in a minute because they hear them daily. Every one that is not addressed on the page costs you conversions silently, because nobody emails to say they left over the returns policy.

Proof is generic or absent. Five stock logos and a testimonial saying "great service" persuade nobody. A named client, a specific number, and a sentence about what actually changed does more work than a wall of badges.

The page is slow on the connection people actually have. Most traffic is mobile and most mobile connections are imperfect. A page taking four seconds to become usable has already lost a share of visitors you paid full price for. Speed is a conversion factor, not a technical nicety.

Nothing is measured properly. No form step tracking, no scroll depth, no distinction between a submission and a qualified enquiry. A page without measurement cannot be improved, only redesigned on opinion.

The order we fix them in

Intent mapping first. List every query and audience sending traffic to the page and what each is actually asking. A page receiving four different intents needs either four sections or four pages, and knowing which comes before any design work begins.

Objections from the sales team, not the marketing team. We interview whoever takes the calls. What people push back on, what they ask twice, what kills deals late. That conversation reliably produces the highest-value changes in the whole engagement.

Structure before design. The page gets written as a sequence: promise, proof, mechanism, objection handling, offer, action. Agreed before anything is designed, because a beautiful page in the wrong order still fails.

Tracking wired in at build time. Form submissions, call clicks, WhatsApp clicks, scroll depth and step-level drop-off, all verified firing before launch rather than added when someone asks for a report.

Then test structurally. Headline and promise. Offer framing. Form length. Proof placement. Page order. Each test runs to a decision rather than to a deadline, and the losers get reported as clearly as the winners.

When testing is the wrong tool

This is where most CRO advice oversells itself, so we will be direct. Reliable A/B testing needs meaningful conversion volume. Below roughly a few hundred conversions a month, a test takes so long to reach significance that the market has changed before you have an answer.

If that is your situation, testing is not the answer and anyone selling you a testing programme is selling you a retainer. What works instead is structural improvement based on evidence and judgement: fix the home-page-landing problem, answer the objections, cut the form, speed the page up. Those are not close calls that need statistical resolution. They are known defects.

We will tell you which situation you are in after looking at your numbers, rather than assuming you can support a testing programme because we would like to run one.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good landing page conversion rate?

It depends entirely on your offer, price point, traffic source and category, so any single benchmark quoted at you is close to meaningless. A high-value B2B enquiry converting at two per cent may be excellent; a low-friction lead magnet at two per cent is poor. The useful comparison is your page against itself last quarter, not against an industry average that averages businesses nothing like yours.

How is a landing page different from a website page?

A website page serves many audiences and purposes, so it compromises on all of them. A landing page serves one audience arriving with one intent and asks for one action. Everything not supporting that action gets removed, because each additional link is an opportunity to leave without converting.

Should I send Google Ads traffic to my home page?

Almost never. Someone typing a specific commercial query has told you exactly what they want, and a home page answers a different, more general question. At competitive click prices this decision alone can consume your entire margin. One page per service, matched to the query.

How long does a landing page build take?

Two to three weeks from research to live for a single page, including copy, design, build and tracking. Longer for a multi-step funnel, or if we are waiting on photography and testimonials from your side. We would rather take an extra week than launch with placeholder proof.

Do longer forms always reduce leads?

They reduce submissions and frequently increase qualified enquiries, which is a different thing. Someone with a real problem and real budget will answer several questions; someone browsing will not. The question is not form length but whether each field earns its place by predicting something your sales team needs.

Can you improve our existing page instead of rebuilding?

Often, and it is usually the faster route to a result. We audit what exists, identify what is costing conversions, and fix in priority order. A rebuild is right when the page structure itself is wrong. Iteration is right when the bones are sound.

Does page speed really affect conversion?

Yes, measurably, and the drop is steepest in the first few seconds. Mobile is where it matters most because that is where both the traffic and the impatience are. Speed also affects your ad costs indirectly through landing page experience signals.

Who writes the copy?

We do. Conversion copy is structured around objection and decision sequence rather than around describing your company, which is a specific discipline. You review and correct anything factually wrong or off-brand, and we would rather you push back hard at draft stage than approve something that does not sound like you.

Will a landing page help our SEO?

It can, with proper heading structure, schema and genuinely useful content. But a page built for paid traffic and a page built to rank organically have different requirements, and we will tell you which one you are getting rather than claiming it does both perfectly.
