The Map Pack Takes the Calls. Here Is How to Get Into It.

For most service businesses, three map listings produce more enquiries than the entire website. The competition for them is softer than you think.

Local search and map pack ranking

Why local is different from organic

When someone searches for a service near them, the results taking the clicks are usually the three map listings at the top, not the website results below. Click-through drops off steeply beneath them.

That map pack is decided by different factors than national organic rankings: proximity, profile completeness and accuracy, review volume and recency, category selection, and local relevance signals. Domain authority, which dominates national organic, matters far less here.

Which is why local search is the best-value organic work most service businesses can do. Ranking nationally for a competitive term means outcompeting every business in the country. Ranking in your catchment means outcompeting the businesses in your catchment, which is a smaller and usually far less sophisticated field. Walk through the local competitors in most Indian cities and you will find unclaimed listings, wrong categories, no photos added in two years, and reviews nobody has replied to.

Profile fundamentals, which are faster than you expect

Profile work can move rankings within two to four weeks, which makes it unusually fast for organic. It is also where most businesses stop at halfway.

Category selection is the highest-leverage field and frequently wrong. Your primary category strongly influences which searches you appear for. Choosing something adjacent but inaccurate because it sounds broader is a common and costly error.

Service areas configured properly. Service area businesses can rank across a genuine radius. Claiming a presence you do not have violates Google guidelines and risks suspension, which is a far worse outcome than a smaller radius.

Every field populated. Hours including holiday hours, attributes, products, services with descriptions, and photographs added regularly rather than once at setup. Profiles that are maintained outperform profiles that are merely complete.

Questions answered. The Q and A section is public, frequently ignored, and one of the few places you can address objections before someone calls.

Reviews, and why buying them is a serious mistake

Volume matters, recency matters more than most people realise, and the specific language inside reviews influences what you rank for. A review mentioning the service by name and the area by name does work that a five-star rating with no text does not.

The system that works is unglamorous: ask real customers at the moment they are most satisfied, make it a single tap, follow up once, and reply to every review including the negative ones. Built into your process so it happens continuously rather than in panicked bursts before a sales quarter.

We do not buy or fabricate reviews, and we advise clients against it firmly. Detection has improved considerably, the penalty for a business caught with fake reviews is severe, and it is applied to the profile rather than to the agency that arranged them. Having forty genuine reviews is a far better position than four hundred that could be removed.

On negative reviews: a small number among many positives is normal and can help credibility, because a perfect profile reads as suspicious. What damages you is a pattern of complaints nobody answered. Responding well in public, without defensiveness, frequently converts better than having no complaint at all.

Location pages, and the thin-page trap

Location pages help, but only if they say something genuinely specific about serving that area. The neighbourhoods you cover, the local context, work you have actually done there, the practical detail somebody in that city would recognise.

The version that does not work, and actively hurts, is the same paragraph with the city name swapped across forty pages. Google classifies large sets of near-identical location pages as doorway pages, and that assessment lands on the whole domain rather than only those URLs. We have seen businesses lose ground overall by publishing eighty thin city pages in a month.

The rule we use: if you cannot write something true and specific about serving that location, you are not ready to have a page for it. Ten substantial location pages outperform eighty empty ones, and they carry no risk.

Alongside that, citation consistency. Name, address and phone identical across directories, industry listings and data aggregators. Tedious, and it reliably matters, because inconsistency confuses the entity resolution local ranking depends on.

Frequently asked questions

How long does local SEO take to show results?

Profile optimisation can move rankings within two to four weeks, which is fast by organic standards. Review velocity and local content compound over two to four months. Competitive urban categories in Mumbai, Delhi or Bengaluru take longer than smaller cities where the field is thinner.

Why am I not showing in the map pack?

Usually one or more of: incomplete or wrongly categorised profile, insufficient or stale reviews, business information inconsistent across the web, a genuine proximity disadvantage, or no local content. An audit identifies which, and they are not equally hard to fix.

How do we get more Google reviews?

Ask real customers at the moment they are most satisfied, make it one tap, follow up once, and reply to every review. Build it into your delivery process so it happens continuously. Do not buy them: detection has improved, the penalty is severe, and it lands on your profile.

Can we rank in a city where we have no office?

Partly, with honest limits. Service area businesses can rank across a genuine service radius, and substantial location pages help. But proximity is a strong factor and claiming a presence you do not have risks suspension. We work the legitimate levers and tell you where the ceiling sits.

We have several branches. How should that be structured?

One profile per genuine physical location, each with its own location page, its own local content and its own review base, structured so they do not compete for identical queries. Multi-location businesses frequently cannibalise their own rankings, and fixing the structure often produces gains before any new work.

Do negative reviews hurt our rankings?

A few among many positives is normal and can help credibility. What harms you is unanswered complaints accumulating. A well-handled public response to a negative review frequently converts better than an unblemished profile, because it demonstrates how you behave when something goes wrong.

Is local SEO worth it if we already run Google Ads?

Yes, and they reinforce each other. Local ads and map results appear in the same place, so presence in both increases your share of attention. Organic local enquiries also cost nothing per click, which improves your blended cost per customer over time.

What about "near me" searches?

Same signals, no separate optimisation for the phrase. Proximity, profile quality, reviews and relevance determine whether you appear. Volume is substantial and heavily mobile, which makes your mobile page experience part of the conversion picture.

Should we bother with Bing Places and Apple Maps?

Yes. Volume is lower than Google but competition is much thinner, so the effort-to-return ratio is often favourable. Apple Maps matters more than people assume for iPhone users asking Siri, and setup is a one-time job.
