What a Business Website Should Cost in 2026, and What You Are Really Paying For

Two quotes for the "same" website can differ tenfold. Usually they are not quoting for the same thing, and the cheaper one leaves out the parts that bring in customers.

Planning the cost and scope of a business website

Why quotes vary so much

A business asks three suppliers for a website and gets three prices, one of them ten times the lowest. It looks arbitrary. It usually is not.

The cheapest quote is typically a template, filled with text you supply, with a contact form. The middle quote adds custom design, some copywriting and basic search setup. The highest adds research into your buyers, message and structure planning, full copywriting, conversion-focused page design, integrations with your CRM or booking system, proper analytics and tracking, and performance work so the site loads quickly on a phone.

Page count is a poor way to compare. Five pages that were planned, written and built to turn visitors into enquiries are worth more than thirty pages of template text.

Realistic ranges by market

These are broad ranges for a small to mid-size business website in 2026, based on what we see quoted. Your number depends on scope.

India. A template business site from a freelancer or small studio often sits in the tens of thousands of rupees. A custom-designed site with copywriting and proper setup usually runs to a few lakh. Larger sites with integrations, multiple languages or e-commerce go higher.

USA. Template sites from a few thousand dollars. Custom small business sites commonly in the high four to low five figures. Complex builds considerably more. Accessibility expectations are higher, and website accessibility claims are a real legal risk for US businesses.

UK. Freelance template sites from a few hundred to a few thousand pounds. Agency-built custom sites typically in the several thousands to tens of thousands.

UAE. Similar to the UK at the agency level, with bilingual English and Arabic sites costing more because right-to-left layout and translation add real work.

Canada. Broadly between US and UK pricing. Businesses selling into Quebec need French content, which adds translation and ongoing maintenance.

Studios in India building for overseas clients usually price well below local agencies in the US and UK for comparable scope, which is one reason many businesses outsource.

What makes a website actually produce enquiries

If the website has to bring in business, these are the parts that matter most, and they are the ones most often cut to reach a low price.

Message-led copy. What you do, who it is for, why you, what it costs or how pricing works, and what happens next, in the first screen of each key page. Most sites describe the company. Good sites answer the buyer's questions.

A page per service or offer. Search engines, AI assistants and ad campaigns all perform better when each offer has its own focused page.

Mobile speed. Most visitors arrive on a phone, often on a mid-range device. Heavy themes, sliders and unoptimised images cost enquiries.

Proof. Named case studies, reviews, client logos and real photographs.

Tracking. Forms, calls and WhatsApp clicks recorded as conversions, so you know which pages and channels produce business.

Structured data. Organisation, service, FAQ and local business markup, so search engines and AI systems understand what the business is.

We build sites around these parts, as we did for Careers Ninza and Nexus Interior Studio, where the site was built alongside the lead generation from day one.

Costs people forget

Domain and hosting. Small per year for a simple site. Higher for managed hosting or high traffic.

Plugins, themes and licences. Many premium plugins are annual subscriptions.

Maintenance. Security updates, backups and fixes when something breaks. Unmaintained sites get hacked.

Content. Photography, case studies and new pages over time. A site that never changes slowly loses ground in search.

Changes after launch. The first few months always bring changes once real visitors use the site. Budget for them.

How to decide what you need

If the site is mainly a credibility check, and your business comes from referrals, a well-made template site with good copy and fast pages is often enough. Spend the difference on photography and case studies.

If the site has to generate enquiries from search or ads, invest in message, structure, speed and tracking. A cheaper site that converts poorly costs more in wasted ad spend within months than the build saved.

If you sell online, the platform choice matters most. We usually recommend Shopify for most product businesses, and we cover this in our article on Shopify stores that convert.

Whoever you hire, insist that the domain, hosting, analytics and ad accounts are in your name. We have met many businesses in Kolkata, Pune, Chennai and Ahmedabad who could not update their own website because a former supplier held the login.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a basic business website cost in India?

A template-based site from a freelancer or small studio often costs in the tens of thousands of rupees. A custom-designed site with copywriting, speed work and tracking usually costs a few lakh. The difference is mostly in planning, copy and conversion work, not page count.

How much does a small business website cost in the USA?

Template sites start from a few thousand dollars, and custom small business sites commonly land in the high four to low five figures. Accessibility, integrations and copywriting push the number up. Many US businesses work with offshore studios to reduce cost for the same scope.

How much does a website cost in the UK?

Freelancers build template sites from a few hundred to a few thousand pounds. Agency-built custom sites typically cost several thousand to tens of thousands of pounds depending on scope, integrations and content.

Why does a bilingual website in the UAE cost more?

Arabic needs right-to-left layout, separate typography, translation by someone who writes for customers rather than word for word, and double the content maintenance. It is real additional work, and it is often worth it for businesses selling to Emirati and Arab audiences.

Is a WordPress website still a good choice?

For content-led business sites, yes, when built carefully with a light theme and few plugins. Heavy page builders and many plugins are what make WordPress sites slow and fragile. For online stores, Shopify is usually simpler to run.

What should be included in a website quote?

Discovery and planning, copywriting or copy editing, design, build, mobile speed work, basic SEO and structured data, analytics and conversion tracking, training, and what happens after launch. If a quote does not mention copy or tracking, ask.

How long does it take to build a business website?

A small template site can be built in a couple of weeks. A custom site with planning and copywriting usually takes six to ten weeks. Most delays come from content and approvals on the client side.

Do I need a new website or just better landing pages?

If your site works but paid campaigns underperform, focused landing pages are usually the faster and cheaper fix. If the whole site is slow, confusing or unable to be updated, rebuild it.

Who should own my website and domain?

You should. Domain registration, hosting, analytics, tag manager and ad accounts should all be in your business name, with suppliers given access. A supplier holding your logins can hold your business hostage.
