SEO, GEO, AEO and AIO Explained for US Businesses: How to Rank on Google and Get Recommended by AI
Four acronyms, one job: being the source search engines and AI assistants trust. What each one adds, and where agencies use them to sell the same work twice.

The four terms in one paragraph each
SEO, search engine optimisation, is making pages that rank in Google and Bing's traditional results: the right topics, technical health, links and local signals.
AEO, answer engine optimisation, is structuring content so that search features and voice assistants can lift a direct answer: featured snippets, People Also Ask, FAQ results and spoken answers.
GEO, generative engine optimisation, is making your business the source that generative AI answers draw on and cite: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini.
AIO, AI optimisation, is the broader practice of making a business legible to AI systems generally: crawler access, llms.txt, structured data, entity consistency and content that models can summarise accurately. Some people use AIO to mean AI Overviews specifically.
Where they overlap, and where agencies double-sell
Most of the work is shared. A page that answers a question directly in its first paragraph, uses clear headings, carries accurate structured data, loads fast and is backed by mentions elsewhere will rank better, be quoted in snippets and be cited by AI tools. Agencies that sell "SEO" and then "GEO" as separate retainers with separate deliverables are often charging twice for the same pages. The genuinely different parts of GEO and AIO are smaller: AI crawler access, monitoring what AI tools say about you, and building corroboration on sources those tools trust.
When you compare proposals, ask each agency to list the specific deliverables under each label. If the SEO list and the GEO list describe the same pages, the same schema and the same content plan, you are looking at one service sold twice. A single programme with one plan and one report is cheaper and easier to hold accountable.
What to do: the shared foundation
Pages that answer. One page per service and per real location, each opening with what you do, where, for whom and the price range. Question-style headings and an FAQ with the questions customers actually ask.
Structured data. Organization, LocalBusiness or ProfessionalService, Service with offers, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and, for articles, BlogPosting with author and dates. Our schema guide has examples.
Technical health. Fast, mobile-friendly, indexable pages with clean canonicals and an XML sitemap. See how we build fast websites.
Consistency. The same name, address, phone, services and prices on your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, LinkedIn and industry directories.
What to do: the AI layer
Allow the AI crawlers you want in robots.txt; blocking them by default is common on some hosting and CDN setups. Publish an llms.txt file summarising who you are, what you sell, prices, locations and key pages. Earn mentions on sites AI tools rely on: industry publications, local news, review platforms, Reddit and YouTube where relevant. Keep facts current; AI answers built on a stale price or address are hard to correct. Our guide to AI crawlers, robots.txt and llms.txt covers the technical side, and the AI Mode checklist the page side.
Common mistakes
Writing for the acronym instead of the buyer. Pages stuffed with "GEO-optimised" phrasing read worse to people and to models. Write the clearest answer a knowledgeable person would give.
Thin location pages. Hundreds of near-identical city pages with only the town name changed are what Google calls doorway pages, and the risk lands on the whole domain. Build location pages only where you genuinely serve and have something specific to say.
Blocking the crawlers you want. Some CDNs and hosting firewalls block AI bots by default. A site can do everything else right and still be invisible to ChatGPT or Perplexity.
Inconsistent facts. Different prices, addresses or service lists across your website, Google profile and directories make AI tools less confident about you, so they cite someone else.
No measurement. If nobody checks Search Console, AI referrals and what assistants actually say about you, there is no way to know whether the work is helping.
How to measure it
Search Console shows Google impressions and clicks, including AI Overviews and AI Mode within Web results. Analytics shows referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com. A monthly prompt test, the 20 questions your buyers ask, run across AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, shows whether you are named and how you are described. Leads are the final measure: track how many enquiries mention finding you through search or an AI assistant. Add a "How did you hear about us?" field with ChatGPT, Google and other AI tools as options, and ask the same question on every sales call.
What results can look like
In October 2026 we launched two New Jersey sites with this full foundation. Black Label Mobile Detailing ranked at the top of Google and received leads from its second day, and nealprasad.com ranked at the top for the keywords its owner expected from day two, as both clients reported. Those were local and name searches with limited competition; national terms take longer. What the launches show is that a clean, specific, well-structured site does not need years to be trusted.
Search and AI visibility across US markets
AI assistants answer differently by market because the sources differ. In California and Washington, technology buyers research heavily in AI tools before contacting a vendor. In Massachusetts and North Carolina, healthcare, biotech and higher education buyers look for specific, credentialed sources. New York financial and legal services face strict accuracy expectations. In Texas and Florida, local service businesses win most from map results and AI answers to "near me" questions. Our Search Everywhere Optimisation service runs all four disciplines as one programme for US clients.
