Google Local Services Ads in 2027: How the Google Verified Badge Works and How to Get More Booked Jobs From It
Local Services Ads sit above everything else in Google for many home and professional services, and you pay per lead rather than per click. They also reward the businesses that answer the phone.

What Local Services Ads are
Local Services Ads (LSA) are Google's pay-per-lead ad format for local service businesses in the USA and several other countries. They appear at the very top of many service searches, above standard search ads, with the business name, rating, years in business, hours and a Google verification badge. A customer can call or message directly from the ad. You pay for leads, calls and messages that relate to your services in your area, rather than for clicks.
Eligible categories include most home services, such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, pest control, locksmiths, cleaning, water damage restoration and appliance repair, plus many professional services such as lawyers, real estate agents and financial planners. Eligibility and verification requirements vary by category and location; Google's Local Services Ads page lets you check yours.
Verification: the badge has to be earned
To run LSA, a business passes Google's screening, which depending on category can include background checks on the owner and field staff, licence checks, and proof of insurance. Approval can take days or weeks, so start early. Once approved, the badge itself becomes a trust signal: many homeowners choose a verified business over one without it, especially for work inside the home.
Keep licences and insurance current in the account. If a document lapses, ads can stop, often at the worst time.
How LSA ranking works
Google does not rank Local Services Ads purely by bid. Its own guidance points to several factors: proximity to the customer, review score and number of reviews, responsiveness to customer enquiries, business hours, whether you have serious complaints, and your budget and bidding settings. Two of these are fully in your control and often neglected.
Responsiveness. Answer calls live and reply to messages fast. Missed calls and slow replies count against you. If you cannot staff the phone, set hours that match when you can, rather than appearing 24/7 and missing calls at night.
Reviews. LSA reviews and Google Business Profile reviews both matter. Ask every satisfied customer, reply to every review, and never buy them.
Bidding and budget
LSA offers a maximise-leads option where Google sets bids within your weekly budget, and a manual option where you set a maximum per lead for each job type. Start with maximise leads to learn what leads cost in your area, then consider manual bids for the job types that are worth the most, such as replacements over repairs. Turn off job types you do not want; every lead from a service you do not offer costs money.
Costs per lead vary widely by category and metro. Large, expensive markets such as California, New Jersey and the big metros of Texas and Florida usually cost more per lead than smaller markets in states such as Ohio. We will not quote a figure before seeing your category and area.
Disputes and lead quality
Some LSA leads are not real jobs: spam, wrong numbers, job seekers, out-of-area callers or services you do not offer. Google allows you to dispute leads that do not meet its criteria, and in many categories it credits invalid leads automatically. Review leads weekly, mark outcomes (booked, not booked, invalid) in the account, and dispute promptly. Marking booked jobs also helps you see your real cost per job.
Recordings are your evidence. Keep call recording on, and listen to the calls you dispute.
LSA, search ads and the map pack together
LSA is the top slot, but not the only one. Below it sit search ads, then the map pack, then organic results. A homeowner scrolling past three LSA ads will often call from the map pack or a search ad instead. Businesses that appear in all three places win a larger share of calls than those relying on one.
Run search and call campaigns for high-value job types and areas where LSA volume is thin, keep your Google Business Profile complete for the map pack, and build service and area pages on your website for organic results. Our home service marketing guide covers the full plan, and our lead generation pages show what drives demand for each trade in every state.
Answering is the whole game
Every LSA lead is a person who chose you from the top of Google. If the call goes to voicemail, the next business gets the job and Google notes the missed call. Staff the phones during the hours you advertise, use an answering service for overflow, call back missed calls within minutes, and confirm every booking by text and send a reminder the day before. For contractors with multiple technicians, routing LSA calls straight to a dispatcher rather than a general line often lifts booking rates on its own.
Setting up the profile properly
Choose every job type you actually do and switch off the rest. Set service areas by ZIP code or radius to match where your crews will travel, not the whole state. Add hours you can staff, a business bio that states licences, years in business and specialities, and photos of real work. Connect the account to your Google Business Profile so reviews flow through. Then check the lead inbox daily for the first month; early responsiveness shapes how often Google shows you.
State and seasonal notes
LSA demand follows the same seasons as the trades. In Arizona and Texas, AC repair leads peak through the long summer; in Georgia and Florida, pest control and termite leads run most of the year; in colder states heating and frozen-pipe leads spike in winter. Raise budgets a few weeks before your peak, not after it starts. We set up and manage LSA as part of our local market and Google Ads services for contractors across the USA, remotely from Kolkata.
