Search Lift and Incrementality: How to Know Whether Your Google Ads Actually Cause Sales
Branded Search and retargeting often take credit for sales that would have happened anyway. Lift testing is how you find out, and Google is making it easier to get at.

The problem with reported conversions
Google Ads and Meta report conversions that followed an ad. That is not the same as conversions an ad caused. A person who searches your brand name, clicks your brand ad and buys would often have bought through the organic result below. Retargeting reaches people already on their way back. Platform attribution gives these ads full credit, so their reported ROAS looks excellent and budgets drift toward them. See scaling without ROAS collapsing.
What lift testing does
A lift test splits people or regions into a group that can see the ads and a control group that cannot, then compares outcomes. The difference is the incremental effect. Google offers Search Lift studies (measuring changes in searches for your brand after exposure), brand lift for YouTube, and conversion lift studies using user-level or geo-based holdouts. Meta offers conversion lift studies too. Eligibility depends on account and spend levels and Google's support team often sets them up.
What the API change means
Industry coverage of Google Ads API v26, released in October 2026, reports Search Lift reporting becoming available through the API and Google moving to more frequent API releases. If confirmed in your setup, that means lift results can flow into your own dashboards and reporting tools alongside cost and conversions, rather than living in a separate study report. Check Google's API release notes before building on it. For most advertisers, the practical point is unchanged: incrementality is becoming a normal part of measurement, not a specialist exercise.
Tests any budget can run
Brand pause test. Pause branded Search for two to four weeks in one region or on alternating weeks, and watch total brand conversions, including organic. If total sales barely change, much of the brand spend was not incremental. If competitors bid on your name, results will differ; check auction insights first.
Geo holdout. Pick comparable regions, such as matched Indian states or US metros, keep ads running in some and off in others for four to six weeks, and compare total sales from your backend. Google's open-source tools and its Meridian marketing mix model can help with design and analysis.
Retargeting holdout. Exclude a random share of your retargeting audience and compare their conversion rate with the exposed group.
Keep everything else stable during tests, and use your own sales data, not platform numbers.
Using results
Turn lift results into an incrementality factor per channel, such as "branded Search drives 30 per cent of reported conversions incrementally", and use it to adjust budget decisions and targets. Retest every six to twelve months, because competition and seasonality change the answer. This is part of how we work out where the next rupee or dollar should go in our growth strategy work and our Google Ads management. See also CAC, LTV and payback.
Market notes
India's state-level variation makes geo tests practical, with clear regional boundaries and language differences. In the USA, DMAs or states work well. In the UK and UAE, smaller geographies make holdouts harder; time-based tests or user-level studies are often better. Canada splits naturally by province.
